BRUNSWICK — The Brunswick Fire Department substation at Cook’s Corner will now be known as the Harold Emerson Fire Station in honor of the late deputy fire chief.
Emerson’s son, Jeff Emerson, is now deputy chief for fire prevention for the Brunswick Department and said the decision was “by far one of the most significant acknowledgments” of his father’s legacy.
“ The entire family is extremely honored,” Emerson said.
His father served for more than 41 years as a Brunswick firefighter and was a part of the initial study committee to design and plan the Cook’s Corner station to serve East Brunswick, Emerson said.
Emerson said the council’s decision to name the station after his father has “been a big surprise and an honor.”
Harold Emerson died on Nov. 21, 2011, at the age of 73, following a long battle with prostate cancer.
On Tuesday, Town Council chairwoman Joanne King said that Harold Emerson had been a fixture of the municipal inauguration ceremony in the past. Passing the proclamation to rename the fire station at Tuesday’s meeting, King said, would provide enough time to prepare a dedication ceremony in conjunction with the fire department’s annual banquet in May.
