BASS HARBOR ( AP) — Maine’s Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse has been chosen to appear on a new line of quarters featuring parks, national forests and historic sites.
The Bass Harbor lighthouse on Mount Desert Island was chosen to represent Acadia National Park as part of the U.S. Mint’s “America the Beautiful Quarters Program.” One site in each state plus Washington, D.C., and the five U.S. territories are being featured as part of the program, which continues through 2021.
The Bangor Daily News says the Maine quarter is likely to be released this coming summer.
Bass Harbor lighthouse is the second lighthouse in Maine to be featured on a quarter. The Maine quarter released in 2003 as part of the U.S. Mint’s commemorative quarter series features Pemaquid Point Lighthouse and the “ Victory Chimes” schooner.
