PHIPPSBURG — A 20-year-old Phippsburg man died early this morning in an all-terrain vehicle crash.
Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry said Justin Thomas, 20, of 38 Quarry Road, Phippsburg, was reportedly driving a 2010 Yamaha ATV east on Sebasco Road when he crashed.
“He lost control of (the vehicle), and struck a utility pole,” Merry said. “We are unsure as to whether or not he was wearing a helmet. There was a helmet at the scene.”
Zachary McKenney, a motorist who came across the crash scene, called 911 at 12:58 a.m. today to report the incident. McKenney apparently knew Thomas, according to Merry.
Deputy Adam Temple was within two miles of the crash scene when it was reported, according to Merry. Temple arrived on scene within three minutes, at which time he and McKenney started life support, until they were relieved by Phippsburg first responders.
It became apparent after a period of time that Thomas could not be revived and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash occurred on a bend in the road and remains under investigation. Speed and road conditions appear to be causative factors, Merry said.
