ESTERO, Fla. – Brian Flynn scored two goals and Spencer Abbott had three assists as Maine beat Massachusetts 5-2 in the final of the men’s hockey Florida College Classic.
The Black Bears (8-7-2) took a 2-0 first-period lead on goals by Joey Diamond at 3:04 and Flynn at 4:54, both from Abbott.
Mark Anthoine scored in the second and Abbott set up Matt Mangene on a power play midway through the third before Flynn added an empty-netter with about a minute and a half left.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
CURRY 66, COLBY 65: Colby (3-7) made 13 of 30 free throws in a loss to Curry (3-6) at the Salem State (Mass.) Invitational.
Ben Foreman of Colby scored 24 points and earned all-tournament honors.
BRANDEIS 86, BATES 72: Brandeis (6-5) shot 15 of 20 from 3-point range to sink Bates (5-4) at Waltham, Mass.
Bates mounted a second-half comeback but the Judges hit 10 of 11 3-pointers in the half.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
BOWDOIN 90, RIVIER 66: Jill Henrikson scored 20 points to lead Bowdoin (7-2) over Rivier (6-4) in the opening day of the Posada Royale Holiday Classic at Thousand Oaks, Calif.
The Polar Bears will face Cal Lutheran today.
Alexa Barry added 17 points, Kaitlin Donahoe 15 and Amy Hackett 12 for Bowdoin.
USM 78, MASS. LIBERAL ARTS 75: Haley Jordan scored a career-high 27 points for the Huskies (7-3), who rallied from a 69-65 deficit in the final 2:49 against the Trailblazers (5-5) in the second game of the Southern Maine Holiday Invitational at Gorham.
Courtney Cochran started the comeback with four straight free throws. Mass. Liberal Arts retook the lead on a free throw by Alie Dobrovolc, but Jordan scored four in a row, and USM held on in the final 1:04.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
ST. MICHAEL’S 3, COLBY 1: Madelena Santore scored two second-period goals and Erin Stevens made 35 saves to lead the Purple Knights (1-9-1) past the Mules (3-5-1) at South Burlington, Vt.
