It’s time for a huge talent with Maine roots to step out of the shadows. Freeport-based DJ D’Anconia, (nee Drew Taggart) has dropped his debut EP, and it’s much more thoughtful work than the glowstick glop that typically makes waves in this genre.

A student of (and opening act for) legend Steve Aoki, D’Anconia clearly knows his way around building a beat. “Dutcheese” kicks it off with Daft Punk chutzpah. “Elodie” is a potent and organized second track stunner. An incessant, but not unwelcome island drum loop in the verse gives way to a ravetastic lights up chorus.

The bulk of the album is practiced and refined, but D’Anconia can still afford to cut some fat. The last 60 seconds of “The Lights” is dull stock beat. Some effects are garishly cartoony. In some cases, Taggart will fall for a certain sound and then include it incessantly.

But the sheen that comes off this short effort can be attributed to D’Anconia’s remarkable restraint. For all the need there is to pump up the party in his line of work, these songs build on slow energy, and jams that never cross into abrasive. As D’Anconia’s bank grows, he’ll be able to buy keyboards with more nuanced beats to work with, and his music will blossom because he chose to start with an eye for subtlety.
