WATERVILLE — The Brunswick High School boys hockey team shook off a two-man disadvantage in the second period and scored a shorthanded goal in a 3-1 Eastern A victory over Waterville on Monday in the annual Waterville Capital City Classic at Colby College.
Dylan Towle scored the shorthanded marker and dished out two assists as the Dragons improved to 1-2-1 in the countable game.
“This team really does a nice job three on five, and you can tell they’re starting to get their legs under them,” said Brunswick coach Mike Routhier.
Brunswick will face Spaulding, Vt., (a 9-1 victor over Winslow) in today’s championship game at 1 p.m. at Alfond Arena before playing host to rival Mt. Ararat on Thursday at Sidney J. Watson Arena (4 p.m.).
Jason Blier turned aside 28 shots in the win, allowing just a J.T. Whitten first period goal. Ryan Maciejewski tied the game just 47 seconds after Whitten’s goal, and Matt Brooks scored the gamewinner early in the second period. Both goals were assisted by Towle.
Leading 2-1, Brunswick stymied the Purple Panthers (0-5) during a 5-on-3 disadvantage, permitting no shots and getting Towle’s marker from Brooks for a two-goal lead. In the third period, the Dragons outshot Waterville 14-5, with Purple Panthers netminder Cody Thibodeau stopping 30 Brunswick shots in the game.
