Brunswick frosh boys now 5-0

BRUNSWICK — The Brunswick High School freshman boys basketball team turned back Mt. Ararat 56- 36 on Thursday.

Cedric Lewis led the 5-0 Dragons, who are scheduled to visit Lewiston next Friday, with 19 points, while Alex Bandouveres had 11 and Pearson Cost eight.

Cam Glover led the way defensively with five steals and Eric Kousky has three. Mitchell Smith played a standout all-around game with five rebounds, four points, an assist, two steals, and drew a charge, his fourth of the season.

UMaine extends coach’s contract

ORONO — Maine has extended the contract of men’s basketball head coach Ted Woodward through the 2015 season.

The school announced Thursday that Woodward was extended for the progress the team has made on the court in the past two seasons and for his high graduation rate.

Woodward, in his eighth season as head coach of the Black Bears, has an overall record of 97- 125 including 5-4 so far this year, but the program has shown progress the last two seasons, with top-three finishes in America East play and marquee victories over Big Ten and Atlantic Coast Conference opponents.

He has also graduated 20 of 21 seniors during his tenure.

Before coming to Maine as an assistant in 1996, Woodward was an assistant at both Connecticut and Central Connecticut.

Eagles pick up JV win over Dragons

TOPSHAM — All 15 Mt. Ararat High School jayvee girls basketball players scored as the Eagles cruised to a 55-21 victory over rival Brunswick on Thursday.

Brigitte Milliken paced the Eagles with eight points, with Rebecca Shuman adding six. Mt. Ararat was 25 of 39 from the foul line.

Samiera MacMullen had seven points to lead Brunswick. The Dragons were eight of 21 from the line.

Mt.Ararat/Lisbon skaters in action

BRUNSWICK – The Mt. Ararat/ Lisbon Middle School “A” hockey team scored three goals in both the second and third periods, cruising to a 7-2 victory over cross-town rival Brunswick Friday night at Watson Arena.

Tyler Halls led the Eagles with a hat trick as well as an assist. Sam Alexander added a goal and an assist, while Mt. Ararat/Lisbon also got goals from Mark Abreu, Andrew Gardiner and Noah Buniskas. Adding assists to the Eagles’ effort were Shane Pennell, Matt Lawrence and Kieley Hetherington.

Corey Taker-Laberge and Matt Deveaux scored for the Huskies, with Jacob Towle picking an assist.

Mt. Ararat goaltender Dylan Schenk played well in the win, making 22 saves. Brunswick netminder Conner Coleman stopped 28 shots in the losing effort.

Black downs White in Midcoast battle

BRUNSWICK — Isaac Burtis and Scout Masse each scored a goal as Midcoast Black defeated Midcoast White 2-1 in a squirt hockey battle at Sidney J. Watson Arena on Saturday.

Trevor Brown was strong in the winning effort for MC Black.

Benjamin Isreal scored the lone goal for MC White.
