WESTBROOK – Dozens of volunteers met at the Westbrook Community Center this morning to pick up hot Christmas dinners and deliver them to more than 100 people in greater Portland.

The Southern Maine Agency on Aging, based in Scarborough, organized for volunteers to deliver a total of 231 ham dinners today through the Meals on Wheels program.

People eligible to receive Meals on Wheels must be at least 60 years old, mostly home-bound and unable to prepare nutritious meals on a regular basis.

About half of the Christmas dinners were cooked at the community center and delivered by members of the Portland Rotary Club, which has provided the service for 33 years.

John Houghton has been there every time.

Houghton, who lives in Cape Elizabeth, first started volunteering with his wife and four children. Today, he was joined by four of his grandchildren, ages 9 to 19.

“We plan our whole morning around doing this,” said Houghton. “It’s just part of Christmas.”
