Man tried driving hurt deer to hospital

GREECE, N. Y. ( AP) — Police say a drunken New York man struck a deer with his vehicle, then tried driving the injured animal to a nearby hospital — for humans.

Police say 29- year- old Andrew Caswell hit the deer early Monday in the suburban Rochester town of Greece. They say Caswell and three companions argued over what to do with it before Caswell decided the deer needed to go to the hospital.

An officer who pulled the car over discovered the deer was in the vehicle’s trunk and had died.

Police say Caswell’s bloodalcohol level was .16, twice the legal limit. Caswell’s phone number couldn’t be located Thursday.

Police Chief Todd Baxter tells the Democrat and Chronicle that while trying to save the deer was commendable, “ driving while intoxicated will not be tolerated.”

Workers recover giant refinery tank

FERNDALE, Wash. (AP) — Salvage workers have recovered a 475-ton stainless steel tank that fell into northern Puget Sound on the way to a BP refinery near Ferndale, Wash.

BP spokesman Bill Kidd says two of the largest crane barges on the West Coast were used Wednesday to lift the cylinder out of the water. Workers planned to move it ashore during a Thursday high tide.

Made in South Korea, the cylinder is 140 feet long and 12 feet in diameter, and is worth millions of dollars. It’s part of a $400 million project to equip the refinery to produce cleaner low- sulfur diesel.

Kidd says the cylinder wasn’t damaged Dec. 9 when it was accidentally dropped off a barge in the Strait of Georgia near Cherry Point. It sank in 120 feet of water.
