RICHMOND — It has been a tough go of it for the Richmond High School boys basketball team so far this season, with an 0-3 record behind a varsity inexperienced lineup.

On Tuesday, at least for one night, things went the way of the Bobcats in a 50-32 East-West Conference victory over Rangeley.

“We scored some points, 13 in the first quarter, and we had good looks throughout the game,” said Richmond coach Phil Houdlette, whose team is 1-3 and has 10 days off, returning to action on Dec. 30 at home against Seacoast Christian. “A lot of the alumni were here, and that seemed to pick the kids up.”

Up 13-5 after a quarter, Richmond struggled in the second offensively, but still led 17-13 at the half. The Bobcats reeled off 20 third-quarter points to take control, leading 37-18 through 24 minutes.

Ben Carver paced Richmond with 12 points, while Nate Tribbett and Sean Bernier chipped in nine points each and Brian Snedeker eight points and a like number of rebounds. The Bobcats were 12 of 22 from the charity stripe.

Eric White led Rangeley (0-3) with a game-high 13 points. The Lakers were just two of 14 from the line.

GARDINER 55 MORSE 40

Visiting Gardiner pulled away in the fourth quarter for a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B win at Bath.

The teams were tied 10-10 after a quarter, with the Tigers clinging to a 23-21 lead at the half. The Morse deficit was still two points, 38-36, after 24 minutes of play, but the Tigers outscored the Shipbuilder 17-4 in the fourth.

“Gardiner is a tough, physical team, which we knew would be the case going into the game,” said Morse coach Todd Flaherty, whose team is 1-2 and visits Leavitt on Thursday at 7 p.m. “We matched them for three quarters, but came up short in the end.

“Our kids were determined and played hard, but in the end, we faced a team that was better prepared to win the game. As the coach, I am responsible for preparation. This loss is on me.”

Ted Cole led Morse with 16 points, with Matt Munster adding 10 points.

For Gardiner, Aaron Toman led all scorers with 26 points. Teammate Jake Palmer chipped in eight points, and the Tigers were nine of 15 from the line.

Morse finished four of six at the stripe.

WELLS 76 FREEPORT 64

The Warriors darted out to an 18-8 first-quarter lead and never looked back in taking a Western Maine Conference win at Freeport.

Wells (2-3) led 40-28 at the half and 55-46 after three quarters.

“We just had too many turnovers, including 13 in the first quarter,” said Freeport coach Matt Cook, whose Falcons play host to York on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Dylan Stevens scored 26 points, Jake Moody 20 and Zach Deshaeis 12 for Wells, which was 12 of 21 from the foul line.

Josh Weirich had a gamehigh 27 points for Freeport (1- 3). Mitch Loeman added nine points, with Weirich and Loeman each pulling down seven rebounds. The Falcons were 15 of 24 at the free throw line.

BRUNSWICK 46 OXFORD HILLS 41

In KVAC play at South Paris, Mitchell Black scored 10 of his 11 points down the stretch to lift the 3-1 Dragons over the 1-3 Vikings.

“Mitchell hit two big ‘threes’ and was four-of-four at the line, which was huge for us in the fourth quarter,” said Brunswick coach Todd Hanson. “They had a size advantage and they pounded us off the boards.”

Brunswick, scheduled to host Mt. Ararat on Thursday, led 11- 8 and 20-18 after the first two quarters, but trailed 32-29 heading into the final period.

Brad Smith added nine points, Ryan Black eight and Trent Anderson seven to go along with eight rebounds.

At the foul line, Brunswick was 18 of 27 and Oxford Hills nine of 16.

MT. ARARAT 66 SKOWHEGAN 74

In KVAC action on Tuesday, the visiting Eagles fell to 0-4 and are scheduled to visit Brunswick on Thursday.

In the Mt. Ararat effort, DJ Cole had 16 points, Josh Wright 13, Tyler Charron eight, and Mason Griffin and Tyler Roberts seven each.

Levi Barnes tossed in a game-high 25 points for Skowhegan (1-3) and Ethan Johnson added 20.

Skowhegan led 18-12, 36-20 and 55-46 at the quarter breaks.

“I’m proud of the kids not running and hiding when we got down 15 points,” said Mt. Ararat coach Aaron Watson. “We had a chance to cut it to three with 10 seconds left, but the shot rimmed out.

“We worked hard and almost came all the way back … we just can’t afford to get down that big, or to let a team score 74 points. You can’t give up 74 points in this league and expect to win.”

At the foul line, Mt. Araat was 17 of 24 and Skowhegan 25 of 34.
