Eagles nip Destroyers in 8th grade hoops

TOPSHAM — Shy Ulrickson scored a game- high 21 points as the Mt. Ararat Middle School eighth-grade boys basketball team slipped past rival Bath 33-31 on Thursday.

Bath, which dropped to 2-1, led 10-4 after a quarter, but the Eagles rallied with a 13-6 scoring advantage in the second quarter for a 17-16 lead at the break. Mt. Ararat (2-0) led 23-21 after three quarters.

Alex LaFountain chipped in five points for the Eagles, with Garrett Bolduc, Max Bodmer and Demonte Stupinski playing well on the boards.

Justin Johnson paced Bath with 10 points, with Zach Garvey chipping in seven and Ayden Brillard four. Garvey had a standout floor game with six rebounds, three steals and two assists, while Keegan McDonough had six steals.

Mt. Ararat was six of 12 from the charity stripe, while Bath finished five of 10.

Teal putback lifts BJH to victory

BRUNSWICK — Corbin Teal’s putback with 45 seconds left lifted the Brunswick Junior High School seventhgrade basketball squad to a 31-30 victory over Lewiston on Thursday.

In a close game throughout ( neither led by more than four points), Lewiston led 8-5 after a quarter and 16-13 at the half. The 3-0 Huskies rallied, outscoring the Blue Demons 13- 6 in the third frame for a 26-22 lead heading to the fourth.

Josh Dorr led Brunswick with eight points, Nate Benoit chipped in six, and the rebounding tandem of Austin Phillips and Teal proved to be the difference. Phillips hauled down 16 boards, while Teal had 11.

Mohamad Mohamad and Desmond Jackson each scored 11 points for Lewiston.

Brunswick is slated to host rival Mt. Ararat on Wednesday.

Woolwich girls pick up two big wins

WOOLWICH — The Woolwich School girls basketball team picked up two wins over the past week, rolling by Nobleboro 57-23 before easily running away from South Bristol 54-7.

Against Nobleboro, Emma Harrington led the way with 16 points, with Jasmine Thibodeau chipping in 13. Harrington and Thibodeau also dominated the boards, while Mackenzie Johnston chipped in 10 points and Madaline Suhr eight points and 10 steals. Pearl Wilson added eight points.

Woolwich posted quarter leads of 14-6, 32-11 and 43-20.

For Nobleboro, Kate Westhaver had 10 points.

Versus South Bristol, Woolwich jumped out to a 24- 2 first-quarter lead and never looked back, upping the advantage to 36-2 at the half and 44-4 after three quarters.

Three local skaters earn qualifications

BRUNSWICK — Skaters from the Skate Club of Brunswick recently participated in field tests, with three local skaters completing their qualifications.

Katy Kasturin passed intermediate moves while testing at North Shore in Massachusetts, and Cecelia Kasturin passed preliminary moves at the same ice rink.

Sophie Calderwood passed intermediate moves at a test session sponsored by Colonial Figure Skating Club in Boxborough, Mass.

BATH — Signe Ostergaard popped for 19 points as the Bath Middle School seventhgrade girls basketball team coasted to a 40-18 victory over rival Mt. Ararat on Thursday.

The Destroyers turned a one-point game (14-13) at the half into a runaway with a 16- 0 third-quarter advantage for a 30-13 lead after 21 minutes.

Olympia Serban added 10 points for Bath, with Madison Savary and Marrissa Wright adding four points each. Defensive standouts for Bath were Baylie Cram, Ali Gagnon, Megan Curtis, Maddy Olson and Michaela Wright.

Erin Tome paced Mt. Ararat with six points, with Sara Lamb chipping in five.

Sugg hoopsters sweep Monmouth

LISBON FALLS — Tyrese Joseph and Tyler Dagnault each scored six points as the Sugg Middle School seventhgrade boys ran away from Monmouth 35-3 on Thursday.

Jonah Sautter, Bradley Harriman, Sean Scott and Hunter Williams played well for the Greyhounds, who improved to 2-0.

In the eighth-grade contest, Sugg rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final three minutes for a thrilling 41-40 victory over the Mustangs.

Nate Bergeron, who scored 10 points, tied the game and was fouled. His free throw completed the three- point play to give the Greyhounds the victory.

Josh Huston added nine points for Sugg, while Austin Bedford chipped in six. Nick Harriman, Jacob Bussier, Eric Yim and Troy Galarneau played well defensively for the Greyhounds, who are 1-0.

Luke Thombs paced Monmouth (0-1) with 10 points.

Mt. Ararat JV boys overtime winners

TOPSHAM — Jordan Castonguay hit a jumper with six seconds left to lift the Mt. Ararat High School jayvee boys basketball team to a 33- 32 victory over Erskine Academy on Friday.

The Eagles led 11-9 at the half, 21-18 after three quarters and 29- 25 with less than a minute remaining. But, Erskine rallied to tie the game and send the contest into a fourminute overtime tied 29-29.

Jake Demosthenes paced the Eagles with nine points, while Mason Griffin added six, and Devin Monteiro and Castonguay five each. Griffin pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Dan Holtzwarth and Josh Bailey each scored seven points for Erskine, which was five of six from the charity stripe.

Mt. Ararat finished 13 of 28 from the line.

Morse JV girls fall to Maranacook

BATH — Maranacook outscored host Morse 15-6 in the second quarter en route to a 45-41 victory in high school jayvee girls basketball action on Friday at Bath Middle School.

The Shipbuilders (1-1) led 11- 7 after a quarter, but trailed 22-17 at the half and 32-25 after three.

Leia Graves led Morse with 11 points, with Ruth Nadeau adding nine, Sophie Sreden six and Cordelia Leeman five. The Shipbuilders were 13 of 30 at the charity stripe. Paige Martin was named the Defensive Player of the Game for Morse.

Elizabeth Dangelo paced Maranacook (1-2) with nine points. The visitors were six of 19 from the line.

CMAA women upset ranked team

AUBURN — Karlee Biskup came off the bench to score 15 points and pull down seven rebounds as the Central Maine Community College women stunned No. 2 nationally ranked Briarcliffe College 45-43 on Friday in Yankee Conference action.

The win is the first all-time for the Mustangs over Briarcliffe. CMCC held the visitors to 23 percent shooting while hitting on 40 percent of its shots.

Jaime Swart added 11 points, while Lisbon native Jenn Caton contributed 11 points and assisted on Biskup’s go- ahead basket with less than a minute remaining.

CMCC is 7-5 and returns to action Jan. 8 against John Abbott College.

Midcoast Black ties Lewiston

NORTH YARMOUTH — James Singleton and Scout Masse each scored a goal as the Midcoast Black hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with Lewiston at Travis Roy Arena on Saturday.

Cade Charron made several saves in goal for Midcoast, while Isaac Burtis was aggressive in the offensive end.

Mt. Ararat 7th boys get past Destroyers

TOPSHAM — The Mt. Ararat Middle School seventh grade boys basketball team defeated Bath 37-14 on Thursday.

Leading the scoring for the Eagles were Cam Cox, Cole Guerin and Jacob O’Neil each with six points each. Jimmy Pelletier and James Hutchinson added four points for the 2-0 Eagles.

Bath was led by Connor Upham with six and Ali Al- Faiswali with four.

EL jayvee girls down Brunswick

AUBURN — The Edward Little High School jayvee girls basketball team opened the game with a 9-4 first quarter advantage, increased the lead to 21-9 at halftime and continued to outplay Brunswick by increasing the margin to 33-16 after three quarters in a 47-34 victory on Friday.

Brunswick was led offensively by Erica French, who scored a game-high 19 points. Ten of French’s points came in the fourth quarter as the Dragons closed to within six points before Edward Little thwarted any Brunswick comeback hopes with seven unanswered points to end the game.

Anna Dimick added nine points and 11 rebounds for the Dragons.

Morse alumni swim meet on tap Friday

BATH — The annual Morse High School alumni swim meet is scheduled to be held Friday at 7 p.m. at the Bath Area Family YMCA.

Russell shines for So. Maine wrestling

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Junior Peter Gilman and freshman Zak Dipini each won all four of their matches to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3- 1 day at the Gulf Coast Duals, hosted by the Concordia University (Wis.) Falcons at Riverdale High School on Sunday.

USM junior Logan Russell of Bath had a solid day for the Huskies with a 3- 1 record including a pin over Milwaukee School of Engineering junior Josh Wengerter.

The Huskies defeated the Central College (Iowa) Dutch 21-18, Concordia 22-15 and the Buena Vista University (Wis.) Beavers 22-21 before falling to the Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders 23-16.

With the three wins, the Huskies improved their dual meet record to 4-2.

Southern Maine returns to action on Jan. 6 at Williams College for a tri- meet with Simpson College.

Mt. Ararat/Lisbon skaters in Gippers

AUBURN — Eric Stuckey scored the lone Mt. Ararat/ Lisbon goal as the Eagles fell to Edward Little 3- 1 in the first round of the Gipper’s Hockey Tournament at Ingersol Arena in high school action on Friday.

Brendon Pelletier, Travis Landry and Drew Lupardo each scored a goal for the Eddies, who improved to 1-1.

Mt. Ararat/ Lisbon goaltender Zach O’Connor made 25 stops.

Mt. Ararat, which fell to Gray-New Gloucester/Poland on Saturday 4-3 in the consolation game, is 1-2 and slated to return to Auburn on Wednesday to again face Gary-NG/Poland at 8 p.m.

Stuckey was named his team’s outstanding forward, while Ian Pinette garnered the outstanding defenseman honor.
