TOPSHAM — A St. Albans man was charged with aggravated driving to endanger Sunday night after allegedly intentionally causing a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 295 earlier in the day.

Maine State Police James Leonard with Troop D said this morning the crash occurred at around 3 p. m. between mile markers 31 and 32 northbound.

Leonard said the 2000 Lincoln sedan was driven by Michael Wyllie, 33, of St. Albans, and his brother Howard Wyllie, 42, of Dexter, was a passenger in the car. According to the trooper, Howard Wyllie told police that just prior to the crash, the brothers were in an argument and he asked his brother to slow down, or they would get into an accident. Michael Wyllie allegedly responded, “You want to see an accident?” From the passing lane he then drove toward the left breakdown area but then crossed both lanes of traffic and went into the grassy area on the right side of the northbound lanes, Leonard said, and either as he was trying to get back onto the road, or because the vehicle spun sideways and got caught up on some grass, it rolled three times.

Leonard said Michael Wyllie was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected through the sunroof. What Leonard could tell, he sustained minor injuries that included some head injuries, but no major head injuries. He was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Howard Wyllie, the passenger, was wearing his seatbelt. Howard was trapped for a short time and was also transported to Maine Medical Center where he was released shortly after with bumps and bruises.

Leonard said three witnesses to the crash told police it looked like a deliberate accident, he said. The driver, Michael Wyllie, was charged Sunday night with aggravated driving to endanger, a felony charge, and was assigned a Feb. 14 court date. Leonard expected he may be released as soon as today from the hospital.

In addition to Maine State Police, Topsham Police Department and Sagadahoc County Sheriff ’s Department also responded.
