BATH — The Morse High School boys basketball team, winless last year, chalked up a season-opening 68-29 over Oak Hill on Tuesday.

The Shipbuilders led 18-13, 38-23 and 55-29 at the quarter breaks.

In the Morse offense, Ted Cole and Matt Munster had 16 points each, Kevin McKellar 11 and Christopher Paulus eight.

Sam Morin had 10 points in the loss.

McKellar chipped in with 10 rebounds and Paulus eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

“ The kids weren’t too giddy about it,” said Morse coach Todd Flaherty, “Actually, I think they sympathized with Oak Hill because we were in that position last year. But, we got a rough stretch coming up, starting with Maranacook on Friday.”

BUCKFIELD 42
RICHMOND 40

Austin Dooley canned two free throws with eight seconds left and Richmond missed a final shot as visiting Buckfield prevailed in East-West Conference action on Tuesday.

Buckfield led 16- 4, 27- 13 and 35-21 before the Bobcats went on a 19-7 fourth-quarter spurt.

Kade Strout paced Richmond, 0-2 and scheduled to visit Greenville on Friday, with 12 points and 15 rebounds, while Sean Bernier had 11 points and Ben Carver 10.

Dooley finished up with 18 points and Alan Hedrick had eight.

At the foul line, Richmond was five of 14 and Buckfield seven of nine.

FREEPORT 35

The visiting Capers outscored the Falcons 18-5 in the third quarter to pull away for a Western Maine Conference victory, ruining 1-1 Freeport’s home opener.

Cape Elizabeth (1-1) led 14- 5 after a quarter and 28-19 at the half before pulling out to a 46- 24 advantage after 24 minutes.

“We had trouble with their pressure and getting the ball up the court,” said Freeport coach Matt Cook, whose team will visit Lake Region on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

Chandler Birmingham led Freeport with 14 points, with Spencer Bernier adding six. Mitch Loeman pulled down seven rebounds, while Josh Weirich blocked four shots and dished out three assists. The Falcons were two of six from the charity stripe.

Chris Robicheaw led the Capers with 21 points, with Henry Babcock adding 11. Cape Elizabeth was three of 10 frm the charity stripe.

LISBON 46

The visiting Phoenix jumped out to a 22- 3 and cruised from there in picking up a Mountain Valley Conference at Lisbon Falls.

Spruce Mountain led 39-18 at the break and 58-26 after three quarters.

“They are as deep and good as everyone said coming in,” said Lisbon (0-2) coach Eric Hall, whose team will look to get into the win column on Friday at home against St. Dom’s (7 p.m.).

Jake Bessey led Spruce Mountain (2-0) with 23 points, followed by James Barker with 11. The Phoenix were 20 of 27 from the line.

Jacob Bremmer paced Lisbon with 10 points, while Tucker Brannon and Derrick Lycette chipped in nine points apiece. Nick Collins pulled down seven boards, and the Greyhounds finished nine of 14 from the foul line.

WISCASSET 60
BOOTHBAY 65

The Wolverines found their stride in the fourth quarter, outscoring Boothbay 21-12, but the Seahawks managed to hold on for an MVC win.

“We did some good things in the second half, and I think we have turned the corner,” said Wiscasset coach Dana Lawrence, whose team is 0-2 and visits Lisbon next Tuesday at 7 p. m. “ We got within four points, and had several chances to get closer, but Boothbay did enough.”

Travis Padilla paced the Wolverines with 17 points and pulled down six caroms. Jordan Jones chipped in 14 points, while Devin Grover added nine points and four assists. Jason Weatherbee and Caleb Bryant pulled down five rebounds each, and Wiscasset was 22 of 34 from the charity stripe.

Anthony DiMauro had a game-high 19 points for the Seahawks, who were 15 of 32 from the line. Ben Wooden chipped in 13.

BRUNSWICK 53
LAWRENCE 59

In KVAC action on Tuesday, the host Bulldogs used a 12-0 second-half run to improve to 2-0, while the Dragons fell to 1-1.

Lawrence led 24- 11 early, but Brunswick was able to tie the game up at 35- 35 when Garrett Erb made two free throws in the third quarter. Brunswick had trailed 31-26 at the half.

Mitchell Black led Brunswick, scheduled to host Edward Little on Friday, with 17 points, while Lawrence’s Spencer Carey had 15 and Alex Leathers nine.
