WESTBROOK – The Westbrook High School wrestling team got the winter season off to a very strong start on Dec. 10, placing fourth in the team competition and capturing two individual championships at the Westbrook Invitational Tournament held at Westbrook High School.
Massabesic took home the team title with 203 points, Marshwood was second with 185 and Cony placed third with 146. Host Westbrook finished fourth overall with 76 points and Mountain Valley was right on their heels, finishing fifth with 75. Just one point separated Sanford from Mountain Valley, as the Redskins finished in sixth place with 74 points. Biddeford was seventh with 50 points, Mt. Ararat was eighth with 40, Bonny Eagle was ninth with 31, Brunswick was 10th with 23.5, Scarborough was 11th with 12 and Thornton Academy and Gorham tied for 12th with zero points.
The Blazes took home individual titles at 138 pounds, where Scott Kirkpatrick took an 8-6 decision over Massabesic’s Nate Mercier, and 170 pounds as Graham Strondak won the title by taking an 8-0 major decision over Mountain Valley’s Zach Cross.
In addition, the Blazes got a second-place finish from Devon Grant at 220 pounds, as Grant was forced to withdraw from the championship match with Cony’s Cody Dular due to injury. Marty Rioux also posted a top finish for Westbrook as he finished fourth at 113 pounds.
After a match at Fryeburg Academy on Dec. 14 (held after the American Journal’s deadline), the Blazes will travel to Gardiner on Dec. 17 for a 9 a.m. meet and will be in Sanford for a dual meet with the Redskins and Kennebunk on Dec. 21 at 5 p.m.
