Falmouth swimmers set new state record

Three Falmouth 8th grade students set a new state record at a swim meet on Dec. 4.

Swimming in the 200 meter free relay, the team of Winslow Robinson, Michael O’Donovan and Kevin Kane set a new record of 1:56:14. Kane also set a new record in the 200 meter butterfly with a time of 2:35:21, breaking the old record by 15 seconds.

Greely students practice global activism

CUMBERLAND — One of the many history electives offered at Greely High School is Global Activism, a semester long course offered to juniors and seniors focusing on global issues and how students can raise awareness and make a change.

Each semester students taking the course are required to choose one global issue and do something about it, whether it be taking action or raising awareness; this semester’s class has a wide range of projects in the works.

Katarina Pisini and Carly Hopps have partnered with the Bilinya School in Sudan through a non-profit organization called H20 for Life. They are working on raising enough money to provide the Biliya School and community with a WASH center, which would provide clean drinking water and allow the students to bathe in fresh water.

Alex Cowan, Ben Hackett and Sam Reed are working on a project called Rakes for Refugees; they are offering to rake, shovel or do other yard work for donations that will be used to provide a refugee family with supplies for the holidays and winter season.

Working with an after-school program to promote heatlhy eating and exercise, Julia Mitiguy is trying to raise awareness about diabetes and how healthy lifestyle, diet and regular exercise as a child effects health as an adult.

Students will be presenting their final projects Jan. 3-20 and these presentations are open to the public.
