PHIPPSBURG — Lester D. Oliver, 71, of Fuller Mountain Road, passed away peacefully December 9, 2011 with family by his side.

Les was born in Creswell, NC on June 7, 1940, a son of Winton and Anne Lizer (Ambrose) Oliver.

Les served 20 years in the United States Navy, retiring in 1977. He moved to Maine in 1985 where he met and married his wife Cheryl. After retirement he was employed as a test conductor on the Tomahawk Missile Program for Vitro Corporation in Bath.

Les was a very caring and giving person. He volunteered at Bath Soup Kitchen and was Chairman of the Bath Lodge of Elks Christmas Basket Committee for 20 years. He also organized the Bath Memorial Day Parade through the American Legion for many years as well as many other volunteer programs in the area. He also found time to visit anybody that he knew was in the hospital, always offering a smile. He was a longtime member of the Bath Lodge of Elks and the American Legion Post 21, the Masons in Virginia where he was the Worshipful Master and the Shrines.

Les was an avid boater and enjoyed it with wife Cheryl spending many hours on their boat the Four Ds cruising the waters of Maine especially the Basin in Phippsburg where his nickname was

” The Mayor of the

Basin”.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Cheryl ( Osmond) Oliver of Phippsburg, one brother, Wibb Oliver of Columbia, NC, one sister, JoAnn Gay of Chesapeake, VA, three sons, Greg Oliver and his wife Nancy of Cambridge, MD, Michael Clinton and his finance ´ Liz Ring of West Bath and Matt Sidelinger and his companion Tasha Berryman of FL, three daughters, Delane Ratledge and her husband Donny of NC, Dawn Flora and her husband Cecil of VA and Darice Maynard and her husband Jason of VA, eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 18, 2011 at the American Legion, Congress Ave., Bath. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer, 1 Bowdoin Mill Island, Suite 300, Topsham, 04086.
