LISBON — Project UNIFY students have been busy preparing for Inclusive Schools Week at Lisbon High School. Posters have been made and activities are planned this week for the entire student body.

National Inclusive Schools Week celebrates students with disabilities in our nation’s schools and learning communities. Schools know that each student is unique, special and one of a kind.

“Lisbon High School tries to make sure that every student in our school feels welcome and is learning,” states a news release. The public is invited to join as students learn about a variety of disabilities, what inclusion is all about and join together to celebrate the school in accepting everyone.

According to the release, the goals for the week, which runs today through Friday, are “to promote the 3 R’s of Inclusion (Respect, Relationships and Responsibilities); speak respectfully about others and value individual abilities and differences; and to walk in another’s shoes by accepting the exceptional.”

There will be a daily message about inclusion read by a student over the intercom. In addition, there will be advocacy sessions when students will reflect upon stories about teens with disabilities.

Videos and speakers are planned throughout the week.

Among them, the American Sign Language class will sign the song “Beautiful” by Christina Aguilera and share reflections on disabilities on Wednesday. “Disabilities in Sports — Taking the ‘Dis’ out of Disability” will be the featured video on Thursday.

On Friday, there will be an assembly on the theme, “To Walk in Another’s Shoes — Accepting the Exceptional.” Among the activities will be 3-on-3 wheelchair basketball and an obstacle course.
