PHIPPSBURG
Phippsburg selectmen, along with the town’s fire chief, police chief and Public Safety Advisory Committee members, agreed Wednesday evening that they would not seek to implement a local fireworks ordinance at the annual town meeting in May.
At Wednesday’s Board of Selectmen meeting, officials “all agreed to do nothing at this time” to regulate the sale or use of fireworks, Town Administrator Mike Young said Thursday.
A new state law that goes into effect on Jan. 1 will allow the use, possession and sale of consumer fireworks.
Other communities in Maine, including Bangor and Portland have enacted restrictive ordinances, and a number of others — including Bath and Brunswick — have taken steps toward similar prohibitions.
Young said he placed the item on Wednesday’s agenda to allow time to prepare ordinance language for the next town meeting, if selectmen indicated an interest in pursuing restrictions on fireworks sale or use in Phippsburg.
Wednesday’s discussion lasted about 10 minutes, according to Young, and the decision not to pursue any ordinance was unanimous.
“ I think the only thing there was concern about was if we have a fire danger, but our fire department can handle that,” he said.
