STANDISH – A home off Route 35 near Moulton’s apple orchard in Standish was damaged by fire Sunday afternoon.

Standish Fire-EMS was called at 1:26 p.m. to 3 Otter Drive for a reported chimney fire that had spread to the house. The fire was declared under control at 1:49 p.m. There were no injuries to the homeowners or firefighters and limited damage to the structure.

Upon arrival at 1:27 p.m., Chief Brent Libby said first responders found flames coming from the roof around the clapboard-enclosed chimney of the one-story, ranch-style home. There was one resident home at the time the fire broke out; he and two pets made it out safely.

Firefighters entered the home and had to remove the ceiling to access the fire that had burned above the ceiling and through the roof. While the fire was contained to the living room and garage, there was smoke and water damage throughout the residence, Libby said.

Mutual aid on the scene was provided by Windham. Sebago, Gorham, Limington and Baldwin provided station coverage.

Libby said the quick response was made possible since Standish has added a second live-in call firefighter to its primary station on Route 35, within a mile of where the fire broke out.

“Certainly, that paid dividends on Sunday,” Libby said.

Libby also noted that the cause of the fire is nearly identical to a fire that took place last year off Oak Hill Road, which also started in a decorative wood-enclosed chimney.
