Annual tree festival
Buxton Garden Club sponsors the annual holiday tree festival that opens on Monday, Dec. 5, and continues through Saturday, Dec. 10, at Bar Mills Community Church, 13 Hermit Thrush Road, in Buxton.
The festival will be open daily from 1 to 7 p. m. with evening entertainment beginning at 7 p.m. All events are free of charge but donations are accepted for “Keep the Heat On!” – a local charity that provides heating resources for the elderly.
Highlights include a luncheon at noon on Tuesday, Dec. 6. Donation is $5 to benefit “Keep the Heat On.”
Other special events include decorate cupcakes with Mrs. Claus, 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 7; floral designer from Main Street Florist in Buxton, 7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 8; and the 12 days of Christmas tea, noon, Saturday, Dec. 10.
Fanfare in
holiday concert
The Fanfare Band, led by John Hyman, will be in concert at the North Congregational Church in Buxton (Groveville) at 2 p.m. on Sunday Dec. 4.
The community band will perform Christmas songs and old favorites.
Admission is a gift for an elderly person or a money donation will be accepted; intermission with coffee and cookies.
Toy Box needs volunteers
The Buxton Toy Box in its 17th year is gearing up for Christmas. The Toy Box provides toys, games, books, clothing, and other necessities to needy Buxton children up to age 18.
The committee needs volunteers during weekdays between Thursday, Dec. 15 to Thursday, Dec. 22. “There is much to do including sorting and wrapping gifts, running errands, clean up, and more,” Carolyn Snell of the Buxton Toy Box Committee said.

Rabies clinic
A rabies vaccination clinic will be held 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Buxton Public Works garage next to Buxton Town Hall on Portland Road.
Cost is $8, cash only.
All dogs must be on a leash and all cats must be in carriers. For more information, call the Buxton Town Hall at 929-6171.
Bowdoin
honors Ridley
Molly Ridley of Buxton was honored for excellence in scholarship in a ceremony Oct. 28 at Bowdoin College in Brunswick as a Sarah and James Bowdoin scholar.
Ridley is a member of the class of 2014.
Students who are designated Sarah and James Bowdoin scholars are in the top 20 percent of each class for the previous academic year.
