Morgan Sewall, a 14-year-old freshman at Scarborough High, stands in sixth place after her short program this morning in the novice ladies division of the Eastern Sectional Figure Skating Championships in Jamestown, N.Y.

The five girls scoring higher than Sewall all landed triple jumps. Sewall received a score of 34.97 points – more than two points less than her short program from the New England regionals, which she won in early October.

Madison Vinci and Brianna Laxson, both of the Washington D.C. Figure Skating Club, lead the competition with scores of 41.20 and 39.66, respectively.

The novice competition concludes Friday morning with the free skate. Of the 12 girls who qualified for sectionals, the top four advance to the national championships in January in San Jose, Calif.
