CASCO – The Casco man who was arrested this summer on multiple counts of child sexual assault has been indicted by a Cumberland County grand jury.

In August, Antonio Jackson was arrested in Muskegon, Mich., after turning himself in to authorities there. The former Christian missionary, who worked at orphanages in Nicaragua and Costa Rica as late as last year, was transferred immediately to Cumberland County Jail, where he has been held since.

Jackson is charged with three counts of class B gross sexual assault and six counts of class C unlawful sexual contact.

According to Tamara Getchell of the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office, now that the grand jury has found evidence significant enough to move on to a trial, Jackson will soon be arraigned on the charges and attend a dispositional conference that will determine whether the case moves to a jury trial.

According to Lt. Don Foss of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson, 37, is charged with sexually assaulting multiple children 14 and under. His family has since moved from Casco, Foss said.

The acts allegedly took place between 2005 and fall 2010. Police were made aware of the allegations in June 2011 and put out a warrant for Jackson’s arrest. He was arrested Aug. 5 in Michigan.

Foss, who declined to share details of the crimes or investigation since the matter is likely headed for court, said he “can’t confirm whether there are other children involved.”

Jackson played a public role in Casco in spring 2010 when a town councilor, Barbara York, was censured by the town’s Board of Selectmen for forwarding an email depicting First Lady Michelle Obama as an ape. Jackson, who is black, had been critical of York and called for her resignation, but forgave her publicly at a public meeting held in April 2010. Jackson’s comments received a standing ovation by those attending the meeting.
