BUXTON – Buxton voters overwhelming approved amending its solid waste ordinance to limit curbside trash pickup to public roads. The tally Tuesday was 1,769 to 602.
The language of the change will require residents on private roads to carry trash to an intersection with the nearest public road or as directed by the town.
Buxton voters also approved two local shoreland zoning questions.
In the state referendum, on Question 1, the People’s Veto that would rescind the ban on voter registration on Election Day, 1,381 Buxton voters said yes and 1,031 voted no.
Buxton favored Question 2 allowing slot machines and harness racing in Biddeford and Washington County by 358 votes, 1,382-1,024. But Buxton voters rejected Question 3, allowing a Lewiston casino, 1,380-1,027.
Voters chose Hiram Davis as moderator to oversee the Buxton election, and the town had strong voter participation.
Town Clerk John Myers reported 2,434 ballots were cast, including 438 absentee ballots. Myers said the total represented a 41.5 percent turnout of 5,867 registered voters.
