During its meeting tonight, the Brunswick Town Council is scheduled to review a proposal that would ban the sale and use of fireworks in town.

The ban comes in response to a new state law that would make legal the sale and use of fireworks as of Jan. 1, 2012. That law allows municipalities to enact additional restrictions.

Town Manager Gary Brown said Brunswick’s draft ordinance is “as strict as possible,” prohibiting the sale, use, and possession with the intent to use or sell fireworks.

According to the agenda for today’s meeting, Brunswick Police Chief Robert Rizzo and Fire Chief Ken Brillant collaborated to draft the ordinance, which is under review by the town attorney.

District 2 Councilor Ben Tucker is the sponsor of the ordinance.

The council is scheduled to discuss the draft this evening and, unless councilors determine the wording requires further work, set a Nov. 21 public hearing on the proposal.

In Bath

In Bath, the City Council decided to schedule a Nov. 9 workshop on the topic after discussion of a similar fireworks ban for that city.
