Portland Police Lt. Tony Ward has been named the new police chief for Sabattus, and his hiring will be voted on by the board of selectmen Tuesday.

Ward, a 26-year veteran of the Portland police, is currently in charge of internal affairs and has been the chief’s adjutant.

“We narrowed a field of 56 initial applicants from all over the country,” Sabattus Town Manager Andrew Gilmore said. “The top field of candidates we invited for an interview comprised a very impressive group of talented, experienced law enforcement professionals  It was clear to everyone on that initial interviewing panel that Anthony Ward was at the top of a very talented field of candidates.”

Ward will be paid $55,000 to lead a department of one lieutenant, four patrol officers and a dispatch department for a town of 5,000 people. 

He has a Master’s Degree in Public Policy and Management, Policy and Financial Management from the University of Southern Maine and the Muskie School of Public Policy. He lives in Gray with his wife, has two children in college and serves on the board of directors for Soccer Maine.
