PORTLAND — More than 30 protesters gathered just outside Bank of America in One City Center at noon today.
The protest was organized by the Occupy Maine group, who started occupying Monument Square and Lincoln Park earlier this month in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movement that started in September.
The crowd protesting may have looked different — ranging in ages from college students to 80- and 90-year-olds to those in tattered clothing and some in suits — but they came together for one reason
“We are the 99 percent,” the crowd chanted.
And, “Banks got bought out. We got sold out.”
Jinnie Delano, a resident of Piper Shores in Scarborough, said the group of seven residents from the retirement community came out in support of Occupy Maine and the protest. Delano carried the cover of an August issue of The New Yorker with an illustration of the “fat cats” sailing away in a rescue boat drinking champagne while the ship goes down in the background.
“We’re all concerned about the deep division between have and have nots,” she said.
While the protest remained calm, two One City Center guards were stationed outside the entrance of Bank of America.
