SOUTH PORTLAND – After dropping the first game of the season, the South Portland football team has absolutely refused to lose, running its winning streak to five straight with a dominating 35-7 win over Kennebunk on Oct. 6.

The Red Riots (5-1) have shot up the Class A West Crabtree Point standings during the impressive winning streak and South Portland now sits at No. 2 overall with just two games to go in the regular season. Cheverus (6-0), which handed South Portland its only loss of the season, is at No. 1 and Deering (5-1) trails the Riots at No. 3. Thornton Academy (5-1) is in fourth place, resurgent Bonny Eagle (3-3) is No. 5, Massabesic (4-2) is sixth, Windham (3-3) is at No. 7 and Portland (2-4) currently holds down the last playoff berth at No. 8.

Against Kennebunk, the Riots used two long touchdown passes from quarterback Michael Salvatore to Logan Gaddar to overcome a slow start and cruise to the win.

Salvatore also hit Dan Medici with a 29-yard TD strike and he also had an 11-yard touchdown on a quarterback keeper in the win. Joey DiBiase also had a four-yard touchdown run for the Red Riots.

While the Riots needs some help to overtake Cheverus, it isn’t out of the question. South Portland has road games left against Windham (Oct. 14 at 7 p.m.) and Portland (Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.) to close out the season, while Deering squares off against Portland and Deering in its final two games. If the Stags falter in one of those games and the Riots win out, South Portland could find themselves entering the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the West.
