BUXTON – Buxton police are seeking the person responsible for discarding a litter of puppies Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of Narragansett Trail and Main Street.
“The puppies were discarded from a vehicle,” Adam Ricci, Buxton animal control officer, said Wednesday.
A Good Samaritan rescued one 4-week old puppy and it was turned over to Buxton police. Ricci described the puppy as small, reddish and most likely a terrier mix.
The puppy was not injured but still needed special attention. It was taken to the Animal Refuge League in Westbrook, where it is under the care of a veterinary technician in a foster home Wednesday.
Police are seeking witnesses and information about the whereabouts of an unknown number of other puppies. Ricci said a neighbor has called police and two secondary witnesses, who saw a line of people along the road, also contacted police.
“We are actively investigating the matter and are looking for witnesses,” Buxton Police Chief Michael Grovo said in a report.
The person or persons responsible would face a criminal charge, Ricci said. Anyone with information is urged to call Buxton police at 929-6612.
