WESTBROOK – Maine transportation officials inspected the repairs to the Cumberland Street Bridge this morning and re-opened the roadway to normal traffic.
The road was closed for emergency repairs early Wednesday. Cumberland Street between Harnois Avenue and Brown Street will be closed through the Thursday morning commute, due to emergency repair work on the Cumberland Mills Bridge that started this morning.
Cumberland Street, between Bridge and Brown streets, and Park Road, between East Bridge Street and Cumberland Street, were open only to local traffic.
Transportation workers will assess the repairs Thursday morning to determine when the roads can reopen, said Westbrook Police Lt. Mike Nugent.
Emergency repair work on the bridge began this morning and was expected to be completed Wednesday but the work took longer than anticipated, said Westbrook Police Lt. Mike Nugent.
Transportation workers closed the the rbidge after a worker discovered a two-foot by three-foot hole in the bridge deck.
The bridge closure created major traffic delays, particularly for commuters coming in inbound from Windham.
The Cumberland Mills Bridge is an 80-foot-long bridge that was built in 1954, and is scheduled to be replaced next year, MDOT said. Approximately 15,000 vehicles per day use the bridge.
