WESTBROOK – The Cape Elizabeth football team survived a serious scare in Westbrook on Saturday afternoon as the Blue Blazes gave the Capers everything they could handle for four quarters before a late interception clinched a 14-13 win for Cape (4-1).

Westbrook (1-4) held an early lead in the contest, drawing first blood on a three-yard touchdown pass from Terry Webber to Aaron Duncanson with 6:09 left to go in the first to make it 7-0.

Cape answered later in the first on an eight-yard scoring run by Andrew Lavallee with 1:32 to go, making it 7-6.

Westbrook took advantage of a Cape fumble and a key unsportsmanlike conduct call on the Capers to drive 84 yards as the second half drew to a close. Webber capped the drive by plowing home for a nine-yard score with just 17 seconds left in the half. A missed extra point (which would loom large for the Blazes as the game went on) made it 13-7.

The Capers came out in the third quarter and engineered a 63-yard drive to open the half, which ended in a two-yard touchdown run from Donald Clark to put the Capers up 14-13.

With the Cape lead still at one through the rest of the third and most of the fourth, the Blazes had one last gasp as time was running out, driving the ball to their own 44 before a pass down the middle by Webber was picked off by Cape’s Connor Maguire, sealing the win for the Capers.
