GORHAM – Gorham voters will choose a pair of town councilors and three School Committee members at the polls in the municipal election next month.

Veteran Town Council incumbents Michael Phinney and Noah Miner are facing challengers Daniel LeVasseur and Suzanne Phillips in a four-way contest with two seats available. Phinney is chairman of the council’s Ordinance Committee and Miner chairs the Economic Development/Capital Improvements Committee.

LeVasseur unsuccessfully challenged Rep. Jane Knapp last year for the Maine House seat in District 129, representing part of Gorham. LeVasseur this year served on the Gorham Founders Festival Committee. Phillips serves on the 275th Commemorative Committee that is publishing a book about the past 25 years in Gorham.

In the School Committee race, incumbent Dennis Libby, who is chairman, and challengers Anne Lawrence, Sara Nelson and Timothy Burns are vying for three available seats.

Katherine Garrard and Polly Shields, both elected in 2008, are not seeking re-election to the School Committee.

“We will certainly miss their many contributions to the School Committee and to the School Department. I have known both Kathy and Polly going on eight years and they have always been very supportive of the schools and have been consistent advocates for the best interests of young people,” Gorham Superintendent Ted Sharp said Tuesday.

Garrard said Tuesday that it had been an honor to serve on the School Committee for three years and she enjoyed the work.

“The community of Gorham genuinely values and supports a high quality education for all kids. I’m taking some time to work on some personal and professional goals in the next year or so,” Garrard said.

Shields could not be reached Tuesday in time for comment.

Next month’s election results, coupled with the one last June, will give the seven-member School Committee a new makeup. Darryl Wright, who ran unopposed in June, was elected to fill the vacancy created earlier this year when Marie South resigned for business reasons.

All Town Council and School Committee seats are three-year terms. Candidate nominations closed on Sept. 23 for Gorham’s municipal election to be held on Tuesday, Nov. 8.
