BRIDGTON – A volunteer coach and firefighter in Bridgton was charged Monday with sexual assault and, as a result, has been suspended from participating in town-sponsored events or activities.
Charles Robbins, 43, of 260 Pond Road, Bridgton, was arrested Monday night and charged with class B gross sexual assault and class D unlawful sexual touching, stemming from an incident that took place in Bridgton during August, Bridgton Police Chief Kevin Schofield said Wednesday. Robbins is being held at Cumberland County Jail pending arraignment.
“At this point in time the investigation is ongoing and evolving,” Schofield wrote in a statement.
When asked if Robbins committed the crime while performing any town-related duties, Schofield said Robbins served as a volunteer firefighter as well as a volunteer coach for the Bridgton Recreation Department, although the assault “is not directly related with his employ in either capacity. He was not coaching, and his victim is not directly related in either of his capacities.”
Tom Tash, director of Bridgton Recreation, said, “Charles, ‘Chuck,’ has been heavily involved with our baseball/softball program as the Baseball/Softball Committee president for many years. Chuck has also coached his own children up through the program.”
Schofield said the investigation is being conducted by Officer Brad Gaumont and that anyone with information pertaining to the investigation is encouraged to contact Gaumont at 647-8814.
