WINDHAM – Tractor Supply Company, which is building a new store on Route 302 in Windham next to Lee Family Trailer, is holding a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday, Sept. 27, at 11 a.m.
The company, which in recent years has built about a dozen stores in Maine, is constructing a 19,097-square-foot store in Windham. Originally started as a mail-order supply catalog in 1938, the chain now boasts 1,043 stores in 44 states mainly catering to residential homeowners and hobby farmers with between 1 and 5 acres. The nearest Tractor Supply stores to Windham are in Scarborough, Brunswick, Oxford and Lewiston.
According to company spokespeople, the Windham store will employ between 13 and 15 people with half the employees working full time.
The storefront, due to Windham’s design guidelines statute, will differ slightly compared with Tractor Supply’s usual metal building “medium-box” design. According to the chain’s site selector and developer, Chris Kettler, of DMK Development based in Muskegon, Mich., there will be more landscaping along Route 302, awning upgrades and clay clapboard siding will adorn the front wall of the store.
