Happy fall! There’s been an impending chill in the air for the last week but now it’s official: the Autumnal Equinox occurred Friday at 9:04 a.m. This symbolic event bodes a fond farewell to a hot and sunny summer and ushers in what for many is our favorite season of all.
Between apple picking, leaf peeping, bonfires and brewfests, it’s a great time to be in the Lakes Region. There’s a lot going on over the next few weeks, including the 161st annual Fryeburg Fair, which kicks off on Oct. 2. See you there!
Our community cares
The sound of chainsaws is always a reminder that we are on the cusp of colder weather, and that it’s time to start thinking about our heating needs. Bridgton has many older, poorly insulated houses, and also many older residents and families who have a hard time staying warm in winter.
The Bridgton Community Center established a Fuel Collaborative several years ago to assist our neighbors who might have trouble paying their heating bills. Last year they provided financial assistance to 28 families at a cost of $11,000. With continuing hard times, they are projecting a budget of $12,000 this year, and have raised $1,600 so far. If you would like to make a donation or help with upcoming fundraisers, please call Lorraine and Carmen at the BCC at 647-3116.
Eastern stars
Did you know that the Women’s Auxillary to the Freemasons is called the Order of the Eastern Star? While it sounds esoteric and mystical, it is actually a wonderful service organization that raises money throughout the year for Food Banks, Christmas funds and school supplies for the neediest in Bridgton and beyond.
The OES is holding a benefit supper for their social outreach programs on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 5 to 6:30 at the Masonic Hall on Route 117 (Harrison Road). There will be roast turkey, mashed potatoes, squash, green beans and apple crisp, and you can bet these ladies are whipping up some delicious eats. It is open to the public and costs only $7.50 for adults and $3.50 for children under 10.
Let’s do lunch
If you are looking for some new ideas for healthy, inexpensive meals, mark your calendar for a seminar at the Community Center on Depot Street on Thursday, Sept. 29th.
Nutritionist Dona Forke will lead a demonstration and class from 5:30 to 7 p.m. With food provided by Hannaford, she will give tips on how to create exciting and easy lunches that both taste good and meet our vital nutritional needs. This class is free and just requires that you register by calling 647-2015.
Try Tai Chi
The new courtyard at the Bridgton Library was bustling all summer long with locals and visitors. One of the more intriguing sights to see was the local Tai Chi group doing their graceful, synchronized moves during their weekly classes.
Tai Chi is an ancient practice of poses and movements designed to improve balance, strength and mental clarity. As the season turns they will move classes indoors, and are offering a new beginner’s series at the Old Town Hall. This free class will meet every Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.; please call 452-2239 for more information and to register.
‘Fore’ a great cause
Golfers love the Bridgton Highlands course for its rolling greens against the gorgeous backdrop of Pleasant Mountain and the foothills. Fall is a great time to hit the links, especially when there’s a great cause involved.
The Mother Seton House is a charitable outreach of the Catholic Church, and provides services for women and children facing financial hardship. The group is hosting a golf scramble on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with all proceeds from the $60 entry fee going to charity. Please call Bob McHatton for more info and to register. FMI, 647-4280.
Honoring their guiding principle of “service to others,” Tai Chi
