Coach: Geoff Godo
Last year’s record: 0-10
Key returning players: The Blue Blazes have some strong returners in seniors Brock Leighton and Jake Limanni and juniors Zack Bean and Alec Hazlewood. Sophomore Zack Wescott should also bring some crucial points to every match.
Key matches this season: Westbrook faces the defending state champions in Gorham on Sept. 6 and 21. Another pair of big challenges will come against Thornton Academy on Sept. 15 and 29.
Season outlook: “Last year was a difficult season for us as several younger players were thrown ‘into the fire’ before they were probably ready for the varsity level, due to some key players not playing,” Godo said. “The positive to that is that every major contributor from last season is back this year and has that experience under their belts.”
“We’ve moved over to Rivermeadow Golf Club, which gives the team a fresh start to the season on a new course with a new set of challenges,” Godo added. “The players are working hard to improve, particularly in the short game and on the putting green. We look for leadership to come from Bean, Limanni and Leighton, who each have the ability to compete strongly in our league. We’re still searching for consistency as a team, which will ultimately determine how competitive we’ll be in the SMAA North, with several strong teams like Gorham and Thornton Academy. Many players are capable of shooting low scores, but need to put it together when it counts in matches.”

Coach: Jeff Guerette
Last year’s record: 2-6
Key returning players: The Blue Blazes aren’t hurting for returning talent. Senior quarterback Terry Webber, along with fellow seniors Graham Strondak, FB/LB, Magnes Lewis, WR/DB, and Blake Toth, OT/NG, should assure that Westbrook has a good nucleus of leadership. Juniors Ben Grant, RB/DE, Devon Grant, OT/DT and Josh Tardiff, C/DT round out the key upperclassmen.
Key games this season: The Blue Blazes are in unique spot, with the prospect of battling unfamiliar opponents all year. The team dropped down to Class B last winter, but didn’t get a break from the schedule maker as the Blazes opened the season this fall by traveling to Rumford to face powerhouse Mountain Valley. The Falcons gave the Blazes a rude welcome to their new Class B home, routing Westbrook 47-7 on Friday night. Things don’t get any easier this week as the Blazes open their home schedule by hosting Wells.
Season outlook: “The development of the offensive and defensive lines are the key for the season,” Guerette said. “We will rely on our experience at quarterback and fullback.”

Key returning athletes: For the boys, the runners to watch for Westbrook are senior Jon Murray and sophomore Tyler Jack. The girls will look to juniors Rebecca Grondin and Bethany Harris.
Season outlook: The boys look forward to rebuilding after losing six seniors last season,” White said. “With the small number we have, we will focus on personal bests and individuals qualifying for states. The girls’ team is quite small, but very enthusiastic. Three of the girls improved their mile time by a minute last spring, so we are hopeful that will carry into cross country this fall.”

Record last year: 12-3, lost to Bonny Eagle in the quarterfinals.
Key returning players: After losing a whopping nine seniors to graduation, the Blue Blazes return to the field led by seniors Kayla Winton, Maryssa Arsenault and Courtney Brown, while junior Allison Lemay rounds out a short list of returning players. Murphy plans to rely heavily on newcomers like juniors Emily Blackmore, Tori Winton, Sarah Hopkins, Danielle Richards, Katie Conley and Abby LeBlanc, as well as sophomores Siobhan Foley, Katie Berry and Micaela LeBeau.
Key games this season: The Blazes will be on the lookout for the likes of Gorham, Bonny Eagle, Portland, Windham and South Portland.
Season outlook: “This is a rebuilding year after we had nine seniors graduate,” Murphy said. “But this group had a very successful JV season, and should be ready to step up and compete with the league. So far the chemistry with this group is outstanding and hopefully it will carry them into the playoffs.”

Last year’s record: 6-8
Key returning players: The Blue Blazes are led by a quartet of seniors, in captain Dylan Gillis, Joe Quinlan, Austin Watts and Ian King.
Key games this season: Gillis and the Blazes aren’t looking beyond the season opener against Gorham.
Season outlook: “With fewest players in the program in school history, the team will need to stay fit in order to compete,” Gillis said. “Several of the seniors have played together for years, and if we can incorporate some younger talent, like sophomore Owen Gillis and freshman Luther Williams, we should be able to compete with anyone.”
