THE YORK COUNTY Retired Educators Association is accepting applications from individuals who wish to sell their items at its annual Holiday Fair, set for Nov. 5 at Kennebunk High School. THE DAMARISCOTTA RIVER Association has added Carlisle Island to the list of conservation islands that it stewards in the public trust in the Damariscotta River region. Carlisle Island donors and their ancestors, the Richardson, Biscoe and Fallon families, donated the 4-acre island, known as “Big Huckleberry,” to the River Association in 2006 to ensure that it remain open to the public in perpetuity.

A recent dedication ceremony at the island also marked the completion of access improvements this summer including the installation of a visitor kiosk, signage and improved trails. For more details, go to www.damariscottariver.org or call 563-1393.

WALDOBORO

KANE SCHEIMREIF, 12, has completed a 16-day trip aboard the historic landmark schooner Roseway as part of the World Ocean School’s Summer Ambassador Program. Kane attended the journey aboard the original 1925 Grand Banks Fishing Schooner with 11 other youths from around the globe.

The crew visited seven ports in New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts, where they participated in a variety of community projects ranging from trail maintenance, amphibian monitoring, bird banding and light house lens cleaning to weeding a community garden and greeting tourists. MEGHAN O’CONNELL, 23, is serving in Gambia, West Africa, as a member of the Peace Corps. She is working as a health care volunteer in a village near Soma that is without electricity or running water.

O’Connell is a 2005 graduate of Bonny Eagle High School and a 2009 graduate of Massachusetts College of Pharmacy & Health Science. She is accepted at Tulane Medical School in New Orleans upon completion of her Peace Corps duty.
