The Abyssinian Meeting House is holding an open house from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Aug. 18 at 75 Newbury St.Christopher L. Webber, author of “American to the Backbone,” will give a talk about his book at the open house.

Trish Mason, an innkeeper and author of “The Seaside House – Maine Innkeepers,” will speak to the Greater Portland Chapter of Maine Genealogical Society at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 29 Ocean House Road.
“The Seaside House” tells of trials and triumphs that generations of Gooches face while providing for the family. Mason lives on her farm in Arundel, six miles from the Seaside House. For more information, call 329-6438.

Mime, storyteller at library
Antonio Rocha will present a free program of mime and storytelling at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Scarborough Public Library, 48 Gorham Road.

Biblical herb wreath class
Betsey-Ann Golon, a herbalist from Shaker Village, will give a workshop on how to make a biblical herb wreath from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, Route 26.
Each herb used in the wreath has a biblical history and is part of the language of flowers. Pre-registration required. The cost is $40, which includes materials. Call 926-4597.
Historic photos on display
Historic photos of the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village Farm will be on display during a free open house from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the History Barn, Route 231.
Saturday is the 237th anniversary of the Shakers’ arrival in America. The History Barn is operated by the New Gloucester Historical Society.

Tuna tourney opens today
The 14th Annual Sturdivant Island Tuna Tournament will kick off at 5 p.m. today with a social, followed by the captain’s meeting and fund-raising auction at Spring Point Marina in South Portland. The captain’s meeting and auction is open to the public.
