Blue Sox take narrow victory as Raging Tide fails to capitalize on late chances
Tom Murphy had a pair of hits and an RBI to help the Blue Sox (19-13) take down the Raging Tide (7-25) with a 3-1 win at Old Orchard Beach.
Matt Coglio struck out nine in six innings for Old Orchard Beach, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits. Tim Quinn knocked in the Tide’s lone run.
Old Orchard Beach had two chances to even the score late in the game, leaving two runners on base in both the eighth and ninth innings.
• Jeff Cammans drove in four runs for the Holyoke as the visiting Mountaineers took a 6-2 victory over the Sanford Mainers at Sanford on Monday.
Paul Kronenfeld hit his first home run of the season for Sanford (15-13) as Holyoke improved to 17-13.
JUNIOR LEGION: Thomas Sullivan had two hits and drove in three runs to lead Orthopaedic Associates-Yarmouth (11-5) to an 11-8 win over visiting Freeport.
Ethan Perrier hit two run-scoring singles for Yarmouth, which went ahead 11-4 with a five-run fourth inning.
Nick Cartmell had two hits for Freeport, which rallied for four runs in the seventh.
LITTLE LEAGUE: A youth baseball team from Uganda will be the first from the continent of Africa to compete in the Little League World Series.
The Rev. John Foundation Little League team from Kampala won the Middle East and Africa region Saturday, beating Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, 6-4. The Saudi team had won the region for the last 11 years.
TENNIS
GERMAN OPEN: Three German players scored upsets Monday to advance to the second round in Hamburg, Germany. Qualifier Bastian Knittel beat Ivan Dodig 6-4, 6-3 for his first tour-level victory of the year.
Wild card Tobias Kamke routed Pere Riba 6-1, 6-1 and Julian Riester defeated Denis Istomin 6-3, 6-4 to avenge last year’s defeat in the third round in Hamburg.
BAKU CUP: Galina Voskoboeva brushed aside Sofia Shapatava 6-0, 6-0 in the first round of the inaugural Baku Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan. Voskoboeva never faced a break point and lost just four points on her first serve, wrapping up the victory in 54 minutes on the outdoor hard court of the Baku Tennis Academy.
SOCCER
MLS: Landon Donovan, David Beckham and Thierry Henry will lead the MLS roster that will play Manchester United in the league’s All-Star game. New York Red Bulls Coach Hans Backe selected the 22 players for the July 27 game at Red Bull Arena. He picked all eight of the players chosen by fans who were available for the game.
COLLEGES
FOOTBALL: A former University of Toledo football player has pleaded guilty to working with a Detroit gambler accused of placing bets on football and basketball games. Harvey “Scooter” McDougle Jr. appeared in Detroit federal court. He says he accepted more than $5,000 from Ghazi “Gary” Manni in exchange for information about the Rockets in 2004-05.
