PORTLAND — A Maine tidal power company is partnering with a Canadian project developer to break into a larger market by installing underwater turbines off the coast of Nova Scotia.

Ocean Renewable Power Co. tells The Associated Press it has pushed back plans to deploy a new turbine system in eastern Maine from this fall until May 2012. About six months later, Ocean Renewable and Fundy Tidal Inc. plan to install them in the Petit Passage off western Nova Scotia.

The partnership gets Ocean Renewable into a lucrative market. Ocean Renewable’s John Ferland says Nova Scotia’s tidal energy potential is 10 times greater than Maine’s.

Nova Scotia has established a special rate of 65.2 cents per kilowatt hour for tidal power to be paid by utilities to promote community-based tidal energy projects.
