NEW FACES
• Emily L. Cooke joined Pierce Atwood LLP as an associate in the firm’s business practice group. Cooke, of Cape Elizabeth, was previously with Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP in Washington, D.C., where she focused her practice on corporate and financial transactions, primarily public and private mergers and acquisitions.
• Christopher Casey was named chief executive officer of Monroe Infrared Technology. Casey assumed the position in March. He has more than 20 years of experience in maximizing operational efficiency and driving revenue growth. Casey was previously vice president of MESCA Transport Services for 10 years.
• Richard Birkel was appointed director of the Cutler Institute of Health and Social Policy at the University of Southern Maine’s Muskie School of Public Service. Birkel is a community psychologist and national expert on long-term care, family caregiving, and the implementation of evidence-based health and mental health programs. Most recently, he served as chief executive of the Rosalynn Carter Institute and the Pope Distinguished Chair in Caregiving at Georgia Southwestern State University.
• Jon Halterman, M.S., PA-C, of Old Orchard Beach and Lori Niland, PA-C, of Saco joined Mercy Hospital’s Fore River urology practice. Halterman previously worked in emergency medicine at the Henrietta D. Goodall Hospital in Sanford and in family practice and urgent care at Scarborough Health Care. Niland was previouslywith the Maine Surgical Care Group in Portland.
• Mark D. Beaumont was hired at Rudman Winchell Counselors at Law in Bangor. Beaumont, of Hampden, joined the firm’s litigation practice. His specific practice areas include criminal law, real estate law, intellectual property, employment and labor, discrimination, insurance law and alternative dispute resolution. He was previously a litigation associate at Eaton Peabody in Bangor.
• Dale Johnson joined George J. Smith Insurance Services as a commercial insurance broker. Johnson, of Portland, will be responsible for the development of commercial business accounts.
• S. W. Cole Engineering, Inc. in Bangor hired several individuals.
Nate Strout joined the firm’s Bangor office as an engineering assistant. He is a 2011 civil engineering graduate of the University of Maine.
Chris Raymond was hired as a technician with the firm. He previously worked for Pike Industries.
Joshua Brown rejoined the firm as a laboratory coordinator in its Augusta office.
Michael Haynes joined the Augusta office as a full-time technician.
Erik Cohenour joined the firm’s Gray office as a full-time technician. He is a current student in the construction management program at the University of Southern Maine.
• David Remick was named chief financial officer at Woodard & Curran. Remick has held several senior financial positions with companies in the life sciences industry and water filtration markets. He was previously director of international finance operations for Millipore Corp., where he managed a team of 70 people across seven time zones.
PROMOTIONS
• Timothy Kipp was promoted to a senior consultant at GZA GeoEnvironmental Inc.’s Portland office. He has more than 27 years of experience in environmental health and safety management. He first joined the firm in 1992, and returned in 2008 after four years as the corporate environmental health and safety manager for Sprague Energy.
• Sam McGee and James Lacasse were promoted at Bar Harbor Bank & Trust. McGee was promoted to vice president of business banking. He joined the bank in September of 2010 and has 17 years of experience in the financial services industry. Lacasse was promoted to assistant vice president of business banking. He has been with Bar Harbor Bank & Trust since 2008. His prior role on the business banking team was to assist customers with their loan and deposit needs.

• WMTW-TV earned the 2011 National Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio Television Digital News Association.
“This is a tremendous honor for NEWS 8,” WMTW-TV President and General Manager Dave Abel said in a news release.
