PORTLAND — Mayoral candidate Zouhair Bouzrara was ordered today to serve 16 days of imprisonment and to enroll in an intensive outpatient substance abuse program for a probation violation.

Bouzrara, 49, admitted to violating the terms of his probation by using alcohol. Bouzrara was convicted of terrorizing in September for an incident in which he was accused of threatening the life of a co-worker. For that conviction, he was sentenced to 364 days in jail with all but 14 days suspended and one year of probation.

Today, Superior Court Justice Joyce Wheeler ordered Bouzrara to enroll in the substance abuse program within five days of his release. Bouzrara, who was arrested June 30, was given credit for time served.

Nomination papers for mayoral candidates became available July 1, the day after his arrest. Candidates must return them with at least 300 signatures by Aug. 29 to qualify for November’s ballot.

Bouzrara has not taken out the nomination papers but has registered, a step that allows candidates to set up committees, start raising funds and take other steps to prepare for the race.
