PORTLAND — An eyewitness to a fatal shooting in Parkside last year gave his account of the killing today in Cumberland County Superior Court.

Emmanuel William testified this morning in the murder trial of 25-year-old Daudoit Butsitsi. Butsitsi is accused of shooting 24-year-old Serge Mulongo, a once-close friend, at close range six times last year.

William, a friend of the victim, was leaving Mulongo’s apartment building at 218 Park Ave. with him and another friend on the night of Feb. 10, 2010. They had left a party and William was going to give the other two men a ride downtown.

Mulongo had one foot outside the threshold of the building when William felt someone behind him tap him on the shoulder, William testified. Butsitsi was behind him, stuck out his arm and started shooting, William said. As William jumped back, Butsitsi stepped in front of him, he said.

William said he grappled with the shooter and bit him hard on the back of the left shoulder. Butsitsi paused, pointing the gun at William and then lowered it, William said.

William said he ran through the building and out another door. He said he saw Butsitsi outside, turning in circles with his hands in the air and still holding the gun.

Butsitsi told William to run. William said he ran down Park Avenue and Butsitsi followed him, but William realized he hadn’t kept up. William said he saw Butsitsi place a gun by a bush.

Butsitsi caught up to William in a parking lot, he said, took off a pair of latex gloves and dropped them in the lot before taking stairs up to Grant Street. William said he saw Butsitsi make a left and get into a car and that he, William, took a right and ran back to his own car.
