LOS ANGELES – They came, they schmoozed, they fundraised.

Following a nonstop weekend that included a few chukkers of polo, time with Hollywood’s own version of royalty and several events that raised millions of dollars for charity, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge headed back to the U.K. on Sunday.

Their Southern Californian stopover came at the end of a nine-day visit to Canada, the first tour Prince William and his bride Catherine have made since getting married in April.

The U.S. portion of their travels was a somewhat low-key affair compared to their northern visit, where — French separatists aside — the duke and duchess were greeted with rapturous welcomes as they crisscrossed the Commonwealth country.

Excitement in California was more muted, though small crowds of well-wishers waving British and American flags lined up to catch a glimpse of the newlyweds, and well-heeled fans paid thousands of dollars to sip champagne in the couple’s presence at a charity polo match in Santa Barbara on Saturday.

They also attended a star-studded soiree to promote British filmmaking talent and paid a brief visit to Skid Row, a gritty homeless area.

Sheryl Crow criticized for singing at rodeo

RENO, Nev. – Sheryl Crow, hailed as a champion of wild horses that roam the range in the West, has been criticized by a national animal rights group that is calling her a hypocrite for performing at a Wyoming rodeo.

The “All I Wanna Do” singer planned to donate a portion of the proceeds from her July 22 concert at the Cheyenne Frontier Days to a wild-horse protection group that’s suing the government to try to halt a mustang roundup in Nevada. Crow is the opening act for Kid Rock on a tour that includes the Wyoming gig.

But Showing Animals Respect and Kindness claimed that wild horses are abused at that event in a special race just for them.

LONDON – David Beckham’s spokesman said that the soccer star’s wife Victoria gave birth to a healthy baby girl on Sunday.

Simon Oliveira said that the celebrity couple are “delighted to announce the birth of their daughter.”

“Happy and healthy she arrived at 7:55 a.m. this morning at Cedars Sinai hospital in Los Angeles and weighed 7 pounds 10 ounces,” Oliveira posted on Twitter, adding that the Beckhams’ three sons “are excited to welcome their baby sister to the family.”

The Beckhams, who married in 1999 and whose celebrity is entrenched on both sides of the Atlantic, already have three boys: Brooklyn, 11, Romeo, 8, and Cruz, 5.

The family have yet to announce a name for the little girl, who was born the morning after Beckham scored directly from a corner kick to give the Los Angeles Galaxy a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Fire, extending his team’s Major League Soccer unbeaten streak to 12 matches.

The 36-year-old Beckham captained England’s national team from 2000 to 2006. He played for Manchester United and Spain’s Real Madrid before moving to L.A. to join the Galaxy in 2007.

Thirty-seven-year-old Victoria Beckham found fame as a singer for 1990s girl band the Spice Girls and has since become a fixture of the fashion circuit.

Just days ago the LA Galaxy star posted a picture of his heavily pregnant wife on Facebook. Beneath the image — which appeared to show his wife sunbathing — Beckham wrote: “Took this pic of Victoria while she wasn’t looking. She looks amazing, so close now to the baby being born!”
