PORTLAND — The victim of the hit and run crash following Monday night’s fireworks on Munjoy Hill in Portland remains in critical condition at Maine Medical Center today.

Steven Makris, 39, of Pelham, N.H., was injured following a confrontation with the driver of a Dodge Durango which had hit his parked car, witnesses said.

Makris was injured after hanging onto a Durango as it sped away, then falling to the ground where he hit his head on the pavement, police said.

The Durango had pushed into the front of Makris’ Honda Accord, moving it backward and slightly damaging the license plate holder, police said.

The driver of a Dodge Durango, Jason Beaudoin, 34, of Portland, backed into the Accord at Congress and Munjoy streets as he got ready to leave the area at 10:15 p.m. Monday, police said. He apparently slammed into the Accord intentionally, police said.

Makris charged out of a nearby apartment, shirtless, and confronted Beaudoin, witnesses said. As the Durango left, the Makris owner grabbed the SUV and was dragged by it before being knocked to the ground and injured.

It does not appear that the men knew each other, police said, and it is unclear why Beaudoin backed into the Accord.

Police found Beaudoin at 6 a.m. Tuesday at his home. They interviewed him but did not charge him. The Durango was impounded and has been checked for evidence, said police Cmdr. Vern Malloch.

Police say Beaudoin is likely to be charged in the incident, and the exact charges will be determined by the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office after the investigation is complete.

The incident happened shortly after the fireworks ended, while many people were still on Munjoy Hill and the nearby Eastern Promenade.

Portland police ask that anyone who saw the incident or has information about it call them at 874-8554.

The fireworks drew an unusually large crowd Monday, but police reported relatively few significant problems.

Capt. Ted Ross said that before and during the fireworks, there were very few calls for service. After the show, police were called for what was reported to be a melee involving several people, but when officers arrived, it had died down, he said.
