Lefty Charlie Furbush of South Portland is scheduled to make his first Major League start for the Detroit Tigers Monday night against the Los Angeles Angels.

Furbush, who had been pitching in middle relief out of the bullpen, was promoted to the starting rotation today, according to the Detroit News.

In 12 relief appearances he’s gone 1-1 with a 2.49 earned run average, 17 strikeouts, and nine walks in 21.2 innings.

Furbush replaces Phil Coke in the rotation.

“I like his stuff, like I like Coke’s stuff,” Manager Jim Leyland told the Detroit News. “I don’t know what he’s going to do.

“Is this some magic formula? We don’t know that. But I think he deserves an opportunity.”

Furbush had gone 4-3 with a 2.91 ERA for the Toledo (Ohio) MudHens before being recalled in May.
