Archaeological field work

The Damariscotta River Association 2011 Archaeological Field School led by Archaeologist Tim Dinsmore at the 17th-century John Brown homestead will be held July 10-15 and 17-22.

Field school participants will learn the principles of archaeological research while helping with the project. Each session includes a half-day lecture and visit to the site and five full days of digging. The cost for one session is $325, $550 for both.

Sculptor to give talk

Local Jeweler and Sculptor Michael Good will give a talk on “Dissipative Structures – Non-Definitive Forms” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Camden Public Library at 55 Main St.

African drumming show

Springvale Public Library will sponsor a free African drumming session with percussionist Annegret Baier from 2 to 3 p.m. today in the Little Theatre in Nasson Community Center at 21 Bradeen St.

Butterfly program for kids

“Let’s Go to Mexico!” a program about butterflies will be offered at 3 p.m. today at Wiscasset Public Library, at 21 High St.

Jerry Schneider will present a slide show detailing the amazing monarch migration to Mexico. The program concludes with a butterfly T-shirt craft for children. T-shirts can be purchased for $4 each or participants may bring their own. The talk is free and open the public. For more details, call 882-7161.

Food preservation classes

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension Androscoggin and Sagadahoc county office, at 24 Main St., will offer “Preserving the Harvest” workshops from 1 to 4 p.m. today and July 13. Today’s session is on making low-sugar jellies and jams, while session 2 focuses on pickling.

St. George Historical Society will present the talk “The Life of a Maine Soldier During the War Between the States” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the St. George Town Office Building.

Retired Camden educator Henry Lunn will present a historic portrayal of a program of living history as his ancestor Myron W. Harris of Littleton. Harris was a member of Joshua L. Chamberlain’s 20th Maine in 1862 as a Union soldier in the Battle of Little Round Top at Gettysburg. A potluck supper will be held at 6:30 p.m. The talk is open to the public.
