Gouin drives in five runs to lead Sanford past Staples for a 14-9 American Legion win

Ethan Gouin had four hits, including a triple, to drive in five runs for Sanford (2-2) in their 14-9 American Legion win at home over Staples.

Sanford took an 8-2 lead in the first inning after reaching base eight times on three walks and five singles.

Cody Mooney earned the win and also had an RBI double. Sean Smith had two hits, including an RBI triple.

Chris Jones had a two-run double in the first inning and Matt Cote added a two-run single in the fifth to lead Biddeford & Saco Savings (3-1) to a 6-2 win over the Post 91 Titans (1-5) at North Berwick.

Marc Bourgeois and David Arlin knocked in one run each for the Post 91 Titans.

Jeff Gelinas struck out nine over six innings for Fayette-Staples (4-0) to earn the 10-0 win at home over Kennebunk.

With Fayette-Staples leading 4-0, Jack Kenney drove in two more runs on a single in a six-run fifth inning.

JUNIOR LEGION: Jack Herzig went 3 for 5, including a triple, to drive in two runs and score two more for Windham (4-0) in its 14-4 win at home over Cumberland (1-1). The game was called after six innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Teammate Joe Francoeur drove in two runs on a single and a double and also scored two runs.

MAYWEATHER SUED: Floyd Mayweather Jr. is being sued for allegedly directing his bodyguards to attack a man in the valet parking area of the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas last year.

Anthony Cliff filed a lawsuit against Mayweather in state court in Las Vegas on Friday. The lawsuit alleges that Mayweather became upset after Cliff tried to take Mayweather’s photo and ask the boxer about an upcoming fight at the Palms on March 27, 2010.

MLS: D.C. United acquired veteran playmaker Dwayne De Rosario from the New York Red Bulls in exchange for midfielder Dax McCarty. Earlier Monday, D.C. United acquired defender Brandon McDonald from the San Jose Earthquakes in exchange for allocation money.

COLLEGES

MEN’S BASKETBALL: The University of Kentucky gave Coach John Calipari a two-year contract extension worth a total of up to $5.75 million, including up to $850,000 a year in incentives.

A tour bus official says Lorenzo Charles, the former North Carolina State star who scored the winning basket to give the Wolfpack the 1983 national title, was killed when a bus he was driving crashed in Raleigh. He was 47.

HOCKEY

AHL: The Vancouver Canucks and the Chicago Wolves announced a two-year partnership. Both teams lost their prior affiliates when the Atlanta Thrashers moved to Winnipeg.

The Norfolk Admirals signed former University of Maine defenseman Jeff Dimmen to a one-year contract with a club option for the 2012-2013 season.
