Alison Smith, an assistant women’s basketball coach at Bowdoin, has been hired as an assistant coach at the U.S. Naval Academy. Smith, a 2005 Bowdoin graduate, will serve under her former college coach, Stefanie Pemper. She fills the vacancy created when Julie Veillieux left Pemper’s staff to become the head coach at Colby.

 

Bowdoin women’s lacrosse coach Liz Grote has been named Pilgrim Region Coach of the Year by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association. Grote guided the Polar Bears to an 18-3 record and their first trip to the NCAA Division III Final Four. Bowdoin lost to Gettysburg in the national championship game, but set a school record for victories.

Bowdoin field hockey and ice hockey player Michaela Calnan has been nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award by the New England Small College Athletic Conference. During her four years at Bowdoin, Calnan helped the Polar Bears win three national championships in field hockey. She also served as captain of the ice hockey team this past season. Calnan graduated with honors last month with a 3.63 grade-point average.

 

Liz Sawyer, a recent graduate of Thornton Academy, plans to enroll at Chatham University in Pittsburgh and participate on both the soccer and swimming teams. Sawyer was an honor-roll student for four years and has been a goalkeeper for the premier Velocity Soccer Club.

Charlie Hayes of Arundel aced the 12th hole at Dutch Elm Golf Club during the Kennebunk-Kennebunkport Alumni Golf Tournament on June 17. He used a 7-iron for the 125-yard shot, which was witnessed by Steve Mosley, Kevin Crowley and Jim Nadeau.

 

Jonathan Brogan scored a hole-in-one on the 185-yard 15th hole at Purpoodock Club on June 18.

Michael Marks of Westport, Conn., used a 4-hybrid to ace the 180-yard, 13th hole at Dunegrass Country Club on June 19.

Jenny Schubert aced the 107-yard second hole at Point Sebago Golf Resort on June 21. She used an 8-hybrid for the shot, made during the second day of the Southern Maine Women’s Golf Association’s Metropolitan Tournament. Schubert, who golfs at Nonesuch River, was playing with Wendy Bean, Jan Hill and Louise Trask.

 

Mike Connolly carded a hole-in-one on the 192-yard 5th hole at Willowdale Golf Club on June 22. He used a driver for the shot, which was witnessed by Jim DiBiase, Bob Par- ent, Ed McKay.

 

Dylan Turner aced the fourth hole at Gorham Country Club on June 20. Turner used a 9-iron for the 160-yard shot, which was witnessed by Nick Hawkes and Andrew Scontras.

Waldemar Sygnecki scored a hole-in-one Sunday on the 17th hole at Nonesuch River Golf Club. He used a 9-iron for the 151-yard shot, which was witnessed by Bill Cashman, Pat Murphy and Mike Deraspe.

 

Jim Orem of South Portland used a 7-iron to ace the seventh hole at South Portland Municipal Golf Course on Monday. Thomas Higgins and Mark O’Donnell witnessed the shot.
