AUGUSTA — Police are looking for an Augusta man they say struck another man with a hammer in a botched robbery attempted Sunday night.

Zachary A. Gagnon, 31, is being sought in connection with an attempted robbery at College Carryout on Mount Vernon Avenue, said Augusta Police Lt. Kevin Lully.

The victim, Brett Gray, 28, of Farmingdale, suffered non life-threatening injuries, for which he was treated at the scene, Lully said.

Gagnon was freed from federal prison 18 months ago after serving nearly six years for his role in a 2001 robbery of an Augusta pharmacy.

Sunday’s robbery attempt occurred shortly before 8 p.m., as Gray was sitting at a picnic table outside College Carryout with a female companion.

“He was approached by the suspect, who struck him a couple times with a blunt object believed to be a hammer and demanded money,” Lully said.

Gray ran into the store and told employees to call police without giving the suspect any money, Lully said.

The attacker, meanwhile, fled in a black Ford Ranger.

“Once he found out he was not going to be receiving any money for his efforts Mr. Gagnon fled the scene,” Lully said.

Gagnon was one of three people to take part in an armed robbery of an Augusta CVS in 2001. He was sentenced in 2002 to nearly 8 years in prison and ordered to pay $10,300 in restitution after pleading guilty to armed robbery of a pharmacy, aiding and abetting the use of a firearm in the commission of a federal crime of violence and possession of a quantity of a controlled substance-oxycodone-with intent to distribute.

Lully asked anyone with information on Gagnon’s whereabouts to call Augusta Police at 626-2370 ext. 0.
