Defending champion South Carolina returns to College World Series championship series

Adam Matthews scored in the bottom of the 13th inning after Virginia reliever Cody Winiarski botched two throws after fielding bunts, sending defending national champion South Carolina back to the College World Series finals with a 3-2 victory Friday night in Omaha, Neb.

South Carolina closer Matt Price worked out of bases-loaded situations in the 10th, 12th and 13th innings.

The Gamecocks (53-14) will play Florida (53-17) in an all-Southeastern Conference best-of-three final beginning Monday.

Florida advanced when Preston Tucker drove in the go-ahead run with a bases-loaded single in the eighth inning as the Gators defeated Vanderbilt, 6-4.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: UMaine Coach Scott Atherley said his program has received four commitments for the upcoming season. Two-time high school All-American Jordan Pellerin of Waterville heads the list that includes Camille Varin-Tremblay of Saint Hubert, Quebec, Brianna Hammond of Greene and Gretel Breton of Greenville.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Diana Taurasi scored 20 points, Candice Dupree added 19 and the Phoenix Mercury increased their winning streak to three games with a 92-83 victory over the Dream at Atlanta.

Jia Perkins scored 31 points and Becky Hammon had 22 to help the host San Antonio Silver Stars rally to a 90-80 OT win over the Los Angeles Sparks.

HORSE RACING

CHURCHILL DOWNS: Racing has resumed at Churchill Downs two days after a tornado caused damage to the barn area and forced the track in Louisville, Ky., to cancel racing. Fans began arriving at 4 p.m. for “Downs After Dark,” the track’s popular night racing series.

Track officials canceled Thursday’s scheduled racing after a tornado Wednesday evening damaged several barns and forced up to 100 horses to be moved.

AUTO RACING

NASCAR: Joey Logano won the pole on the road course at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.

Logano posted a lap of 93.256 mph in his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota to take the top qualifying spot for Sunday’s Sprint Cup race. It snapped Kurt Busch’s streak of three consecutive poles.

Jamie McMurray qualified second in a Chevrolet with a lap at 93.223 and Paul Menard was third. Denny Hamlin was fourth, Ryan Newman fifth and Kasey Kahne sixth.

INDYCAR SERIES: Takuma Sato earned his first pole in the IndyCar series for tonight’s race in Newton, Iowa, and will be joined on the front row by Danica Patrick.

Defending champion Tony Kanaan will start third. JR Hildebrand will be fourth. Series co-points leaders Will Power and Dario Franchitti will start fifth and sixth, respectively.

SOCCER

MLS: D.C. United’s Charlie Davies has been fined $1,000 for taking a blatant dive to draw a penalty kick that led to a goal late in Saturday’s game against Real Salt Lake.

The Los Angeles Galaxy was fined $5,000 for omitting David Beckham’s name from an injury report before its June 18 match against the Colorado Rapids.

The league said in a release that the Galaxy knew Beckham would miss the game because of back spasms and deliberately left his name off the report.

The New York Red Bulls were fined $10,000 for publicly criticizing a league official.
